Original creditor vs debt collector
A bank or lender may be the original creditor because it provided the account or borrowing. A debt collector may later administer or collect the account, and a separate debt purchaser may become the legal owner. These pages identify those roles so you can distinguish who provided the credit, who owns it and who is contacting you.
Before paying a debt collector
Confirm the account, original creditor, current legal owner and amount claimed. If you do not recognise the debt, raise that before agreeing payment. If the debt is unaffordable, prioritise essential household bills and consider independent debt advice.
Common debt collection stages
A debt collector contacting you does not automatically mean court enforcement has started. These guides explain the separate stages that may follow and the checks you can make at each point.
