PRA Group

Why has my debt been sold to PRA Group?

Independent explanation of what it means when a debt is sold to PRA Group, who may own the account and what to check before making payments.

PRA Group says that creditors may sell unpaid accounts to companies in its group. Its current UK guidance explains that an account may be sold to PRA Group UK Portfolios Ltd while day-to-day account management is carried out by PRA Group (UK) Limited. Check the original creditor, account reference and the company named as owner on your correspondence before making payment.

Who owns the account?

PRA Group states that where an account has been sold, PRA Group UK Portfolios Ltd may be the purchasing company and PRA Group (UK) Limited may manage the account. The exact legal owner should be confirmed from the notice or correspondence you received.

What should you verify?

Match the original creditor, account reference, balance and your personal details to your own records. If you do not recognise the account or dispute the amount, contact PRA Group and raise the dispute before agreeing a repayment arrangement.

Does a sale change the debt?

A sale changes who owns or administers the account, not the underlying history of the agreement. You should still check whether the balance is correct and whether any dispute, complaint or legal issue remains outstanding.
