Does Intrum own my debt?
Independent explanation of when Intrum may own a debt and when it may be collecting for another lender or service provider.
Intrum UK says it both buys unpaid debts and collects debts for other organisations. If Intrum has bought your account, it says the money is owed to Intrum instead of the original lender. In other cases it may be collecting on behalf of another company, so check the exact wording of the letter before assuming who owns the debt.
Debt purchase and collection are different roles
Intrum describes itself as both a debt purchaser and a collection company. That means the legal owner of an account may be Intrum in one case and another lender or provider in another.
What should the letter tell you?
Look for the original creditor, account reference, balance and any wording explaining whether the account has been assigned or whether Intrum is acting on behalf of another organisation.
If you do not recognise the debt
Intrum says customers who do not recognise an account should contact it so the matter can be investigated. Do that before making a payment or accepting that the balance is yours.
